US$1 million for refugee children education in Asia and MENA region

KUALA LUMPUR, April 30 (Bernama) -- US$1 million (RM3.83 million) has been donated by a member of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, Sheikh Dr Sultan Muhammad Al Qasimi to strengthen the educational infrastructure for refugee and internally displaced children in Asia and Middle East and North Africa (MENA).

Sheikh Dr Sultan also extended the donation to a Malaysian Charity - Dignity for Children Foundation - to boost the delivery of the educational and support services for the marginalised communities in the region for 20 years.

The foundation will benefit from the donation, in addition to the US$136,000 (RM520,800) prize they received on April 26 as the winner of the Sharjah International Award for Refugee Advocacy and Support - the award was established in 2017 by The Big Heart Foundation (TBHF) and United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).

The Malaysia foundation has educated over 7,000 undocumented students and currently supports about 1,100 students.

According to UNHCR statistics, children represent about half of the displaced population globally.

As a cultural pillar in the Arab region, Sharjah, the UAE´s third-largest emirate, believes that every nation must be built on the strong foundation of educated and empowered youth, a statement said.

This is reflected in its patronage and support of social development projects for refugees and people in need worldwide, led by TBHF under the vision and guidance of the Ruler of Sharjah and his wife.
