KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 17 (Bernama) -- The Tun Hussein Onn National Eye Hospital (THONEH) has provided eye treatments to over 20,000 people in rural areas of peninsular Malaysia, Sabah and Sarawak over the past decade.
On Oct 9, THONEH collaborated with the Petaling Jaya Lions Club (PJLC) for the 12th installment of the Blind Leading the Blind Charity Walk.
The event, which was part of PJLC's SightFirst programme, was aimed at raising funds to help the needy obtain eye treatments.
THONEH general manager Dr Norasidi Salim Al-Haj, in a statement, Monday said THONEH was proud to support PJLC and its aim to raise awareness on blindness.
"Through this event, we hope to reduce the number of preventable vision impairment in Malaysia," he said.
Participants gathered at Dataran Petaling Jaya for the 3km walk in which those with vision walked blindfolded, guided by the blind participants.
Organised with support from the Petaling Jaya City Council, this year's event was held to commemorate World Sight Day, which is celebrated annually on Oct 13.
