KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 10 (Bernama) – More than 100 students from five ASEAN countries are attending the seventh World Wildlife Fund (WWF) Malaysia International Eco-Schools Conference (IESC) held at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Sungkai, Perak from Dec 9 to 13.
The participants from Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore, the Philippines and Indonesia gather to share and exchange their school’s initiatives on water sustainability and conservation.
WWF-Malaysia senior manager for Freshwater Conservation, Daria Mathew said the initiatives were in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all.
“Globally, our rivers face many threats such as plastic pollution and sedimentation (due to logging in water catchments) and so on.
“Hence, we need to empower every water user such as the IESC delegates about freshwater conservation so that they can make informed and better choices for our planet,” she said in a statement, here, today.
With the theme, ‘Water, the Source of Life’, the five-day conference provides knowledge to the students through many activities such as Water Quality Workshop, Water Quest Treasure Hunt and field trip to SMK Bandar Behrang 2020 in Tanjong Malim, Perak to see the school’s effort on water conservation.
It also features experts from the water industry speaking on the matter.
Meanwhile, the Education Ministry’s Private Education Division director, Datin Seri Nor Zamani Abdol Hamid said the conference would help prepare the students to face the issue of environmental degradation.
“The third shift of the Malaysia Education Blueprint 2013 to 2025 aims to develop values-driven Malaysians,” she said.
