SMART LIFE IS A COMMON EXPERIENCE IN TIANJIN BINHAI NEW AREA
Citizens are visiting the Chinese-Singapore friendship library.
TIANJIN, China, Oct. 18, 2019 /Xinhua-AsiaNet/--
In Tianjin Binhai New Area, artificial intelligence is entering everyone's life.
In Sino-Singapore Tianjin Eco-city, if one wants to take bus for work, perhaps one can encounter a free smart bus in the shape of a lovely panda, which can sense and identify its surroundings including vehicles, vulnerable groups on the road and traffic lights, while controlling the vehicle to achieve automatic acceleration, deceleration, steering, emergency braking, lane change and other functions.
On one's way driving home, there are intelligent traffic lights at the eight key intersections near the Rainbow Bridge, which can be adjusted and dispatched according to the real-time traffic conditions by sensing the traffic flow and queuing length thanks to the application of big data, Internet of Things, edge calculation and other technologies. These traffic lights are as if monitoring traffic conditions to make corresponding adjustments.
In the evening, one can visit the China-Singapore Friendship Library, where all kinds of self-service devices can be found. The library enables navigation services to help borrow books, and book-returning via facial recognition, and has a free-walking intelligent robot "Little Library" to serve readers.
State Grid Corporation of China's Tianjin Binhai New Area branch has deployed an intelligent early warning system for distribution station in some pilot areas within the eco-city, which achieves accurate on-line early warning and monitoring of potential partial discharge hazards, and let eco-city users enjoy the "zero power outage" service thanks to innovative applications of the electromagnetic wave spatial positioning technology.
It is a new exploration for Binhai New Area to integrate cutting-edge technologies into life to better serve the people and let everyone feel the power of science and technology.

BRANDSAFWAY WINS ACCESS PROJECT OF THE YEAR
Recognition for Access Solution on $100 Million Space Needle Renovation
Kennesaw, Georgia, USA, Oct 17 (Bernama-GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- BrandSafway was awarded the 2019 Access Project of the Year – Mast Climbing Work Platforms, Transport Platforms and Hoists at the Access, Lift & Handlers (ALH) Conference in San Diego, California, on September 12, 2019. The company won for its unique work platform and weather barrier solution for the recent $100 million renovation of Seattle’s iconic Space Needle. “The circular suspended access system, installed by BrandSafway for the renovation of Seattle’s Space Needle, was the highest, most weather protected suspended platform ever constructed,” one of the award judges commented. “It was a really cool project, taking a lot of engineering, a lot of thought, and expert management to make it happen.”
Dubbed the Century Project, the Space Needle renovation ensured that this icon will continue to define the Seattle skyline into the next century. Featured as the cover story on the August 2019 issue of Scaffold & Access magazine, the project included a 106-foot-diameter starter platform using the QuikDeck® Suspended Access System, which was then hoisted into place at 500 feet with 12 two-part Tractel hoists, each with an 8,800-pound capacity. Once secured, the platform was then built out to its full size of 135 feet in diameter at a weight of 174,000 pounds. BrandSafway then erected an all-season weather barrier, using Systems Scaffold and HAKI®, which could withstand a 115 mph wind load.
“The ALH award recognizes our engineering team’s ability to work hand-in-hand with our customers and third-party engineers to design solutions for the most extreme challenges – all while keeping safety first,” said Art Eunson, president of BrandSafway Services. “I’d also like to congratulate our on-site teams, led by project manager Sean Drew, branch manager John May and site foreman Jake Willis, for their flawless execution.”
“The bottom line for us [was] having a safe project,” said Bob Vincent, project manager, Hoffman Construction, the general contractor for the project. "BrandSafway had no injuries, no recordable incidents and no dropped objects. That's fabulous, and something BrandSafway and their crew should be very proud of."
Paul Jolicoeur, technical manager of product applications and the principal BrandSafway engineer for the project noted, “Our confidence level was much higher because we used Autodesk Navisworks®, a project review software for engineering and construction professionals. We imported Hoffman’s 3D model, confirmed support clamp locations, evaluated loads and checked for clashes. You name it, and we could model it and share data with the other engineering teams."
Key renovation elements included installing 176 tons of specialty glass and structural modifications so that the Space Needle could offer a seamless exterior line of sight, including a view of the ground 500-feet below.
“With glass walls, glass barriers, glass benches and even glass floors, visitors can feel like they’re floating over the city,” said Karen Olson, chief marketing officer, Space Needle LLC. “The Space Needle has always featured some of the best views of the Pacific Northwest. Now it offers some of the most thrilling.”
Organized by ALH magazine and its publisher KHL Group, the leading supplier of international construction information in the world, the ALH awards are designed to “celebrate the best of North America’s access and rental industry.”

AM BEST REVISES OUTLOOKS TO STABLE FOR CAPITAL LIFE INSURANCE COMPANY LIMITED
SINGAPORE, Oct 14 (Bernama-BUSINESS WIRE) -- AM Best has revised the outlooks to stable from negative and affirmed the Financial Strength Rating of C- (Weak) and the Long-Term Issuer Credit Rating of “cc” of Capital Life Insurance Company Limited (CLI) (Papua New Guinea).
The ratings reflect CLI’s balance sheet strength, which AM Best categorizes as weak, as well as its adequate operating performance, limited business profile and weak enterprise risk management. The ratings factor in a neutral impact from the company’s 100% ownership by Capital Insurance Group Limited.
The revision of the outlooks to stable from negative reflects AM Best’s expectation that the company’s balance sheet strength fundamentals will demonstrate an improving trend over the medium term.
Risk-adjusted capitalization, as measured by Best’s Capital Adequacy Ratio (BCAR), remained at a very weak level at year-end 2018. This follows an internal control failure that resulted in notable reserve strengthening of the company’s medical portfolio, which led to a significant decline in shareholders’ equity at year-end 2017. The company’s management team has since implemented a number of remedial actions, including large premium rate adjustments and strengthening of policy conditions. AM Best expects these steps to generate additional retained earnings over the medium term, which will bolster prospective risk-adjusted capitalization.
A notable improvement in underwriting performance was seen in 2018, albeit still loss-making. Overall, the company reported an operating loss of PGK 2.2 million (USD 0.7 million) in 2018, as compared with PGK 7.0 million in 2017. AM Best expects CLI to report positive underwriting and operating earnings over the medium term, driven by an anticipated improvement in the performance of its core medical portfolio.
AM Best continues to view CLI’s business profile as limited given the company’s small scale of operations and niche portfolio of business. The company also is viewed to have a moderate level of product concentration and a high level of geographical concentration, with its entire premium base emanating from Papua New Guinea.
AM Best views CLI’s risk management as underdeveloped, with recent internal control failures and deficiencies having caused material volatility in the company’s earnings and capital adequacy. Despite significant management attention on improving the company’s risk management framework and governance, AM Best expects this will take some time to become effective.

Standard Chartered Bank adopts BearingPoint's tax reporting solution worldwide
KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 9 -- BearingPoint RegTech announced that Standard Chartered Bank has successfully deployed the tax reporting solution, FiTAX to fulfill its global reporting obligations.
From data acquisition to uploading directly an encrypted report file into the tax authorities’ portals, FiTAX covers over 130 jurisdictions.
These include Common Reporting Standard (CRS), Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act (FATCA) and Qualified Intermediaries (QI) reporting.
Standard Chartered was looking for a software to keep pace with the continually changing reporting requirements; as well as a partner with the consulting capabilities to support the one-time implementation project and other ad-hoc consulting needs.
The project implementation started last year when CRS, FATCA and QI reporting logic, modules and templates for 63 countries were delivered to the bank.
BearingPoint expert team based in Singapore and Switzerland then supported Standard Chartered with all aspects of the implementation from architectural design decisions, via data mapping and set-up, to testing and ultimately go live.
This half-year, Standard Chartered used FiTAX (with the support of BearingPoint experts) to successfully prepare and submit the reports before the deadlines.

Seaborn, EdgeUno launch Latin American-managed cloud services
KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 8 -- An independent submarine fibre optic cable systems developer, Seaborn Networks (Seaborn) and EdgeUno have expanded partnership with the launch Latin American-managed cloud and data centre services.

“Our goal has always been to offer users in Latin America, the most seamless internet experience possible, and now, thanks to Seaborn, we have more options than ever to help make that happen,” said EdgeUno chief executive officer, Mehmet Akcin.

AM Best revises Singapore´s EQI Credit Rating outlook
KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 4 (Bernama) -- AM Best has revised the outlook to negative from stable for the Long-Term Issuer Credit Rating (Long-Term ICR) of EQ Insurance Company Limited (EQI), Singapore.
The global rating agency and information provider, in a statement, also affirmed EQI’s Financial Strength Rating (FSR) of B++ (good) and the Long-Term ICR of ‘bbb+’. The outlook for the FSR remains stable.
These credit ratings reflect EQI’s balance sheet strength, which AM Best categorised as strong, as well as its adequate operating performance, limited business profile and appropriate enterprise risk management.
The revision of the Long-Term ICR outlook to negative reflects AM Best’s expectation of pressure on the company’s operating performance assessment over the near term.
While the company continues to execute on improvements aimed at returning underwriting performance to a position of profitability, the competitive conditions in Singapore’s insurance market remain a key challenge.
Despite the company exhibiting limited internal capital generation over the past five years (2014 to 2018), shareholder equity has been supported by a series of capital injections from the company’s parent over this period.
AM Best views EQI’s business profile as limited. The company is a small-sized, non-life insurer in Singapore, with a market share of approximately one per cent based on 2018 gross written premium. More information at http://www.ambest.com.

As a key component of network transformation, the solution enables dynamic service automation and end-to-end normalised telemetry for multi-vendor networks.
For service providers, the solution, powered by OpenDaylight, works with the most common orchestrators and all vendors’ southbound hardware, regardless of interface to provision services based on business intent.
Lumina Networks chief executive officer, Andrew Coward said while automating workflows were an important half of the battle with the solution, true end-to-end automation was enabled.
“With the telemetry capabilities we’ve added, service providers will be able to automate decisions based on real-time data, aligned to business intent, at scale and without vendor lock-in.”
Software developed in the solution will be based on open source code; either contributed to an existing community or planned for contribution. More details at http://www.luminanetworks.com/

Toshiba launches 3-phase brushless motors for home applications
KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 30 (Bernama) -- Toshiba Electronic Devices & Storage Corporation (Toshiba) has launched ‘TB67B000AHG’, a new three-phase brushless motor driver for home appliances.
Compatible for use in air-conditioners, air-purifiers, dehumidifiers and ceiling fans, the new driver is a high-voltage addition to the ‘TB67B000 series’.
The series realises highly efficient brushless motor drive and noise reduction in a single package.
Toshiba’s newly-developed 600V TB67B000AHG driver IC is pin-compatible with the current 500V TB67B000HG and can easily replace it.
The company is also developing the more compact version ‘TB67B000AFG’ in a small 34-pin HSSOP package which will be available in November.

Fusionex, IMU catalyse medical education, research via big data analytics
KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 20 -- Fusionex and the International Medical University (IMU) have taken a bold step to integrate big data analytics (BDA) and artificial intelligence (AI) in IMU’s medical and health sciences programmes.
Fusionex and IMU expressed their commitment with the exchange of a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA), by IMU Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Professor Peter Pook and Fusionex Founder and Group Chief Executive Officer, Datuk Seri Ivan Teh.
The MoA sees both parties leveraging on their respective strengths – Fusionex utilising BDA and AI, and IMU lending its expertise and knowledge in the healthcare industry – to work together on various aspects of medical research & development, including cancer informatics, advanced drugs, vaccine design and healthcare analytics.
In order to equip future healthcare providers with the right set of skills and knowledge, this collaboration will see five IMU undergraduate programmes, each piloting a BDA module.
The programmes are Bachelor of Pharmacy (Hons); BSc (Hons) in Medical Biotechnology; BSc (Hons) in Dietetics with Nutrition; BSc (Hons) in Nutrition; and, BSc (Hons) in Biomedical Science.
These will be some of the first non-ICT degree programmes to integrate BDA as part of its syllabus.
These programmes will provide four outcomes - an overview of the analytics life cycle, how analytics is contributing to the healthcare industry, why making data-driven decisions is key for an organisation, and effectively using analytical and AI skills in solving healthcare-related problems.
